Fanny Crosby: Menulis Kidung Indah Dalam Kegelapan

Frances Jane Crosby (lahir di Southeast, Putnam County, New York, Amerika Serikat, 24 Maret 1820 – meninggal diBridgeport, Connecticut, 12 Februari 1915 pada umur 94 tahun, biasanya dikenal sebagai Fanny Crosby, tapi kadang-kadang sebagai Frances van Alstyne) adalah seorang penulis lirik Amerika Serikat yang dikenal himnenya Kristen Protestan

Fanny Crosby lahir sebagai bayi perempuan  di desa Brewster, daerah bagian utara kota New York. Saat usianya baru 6 minggu, dia mengalami demam. Namun karena salah penanganan dokter, kedua matanya menjadi buta. Di tahun itu juga, ayahnya, meninggal dunia hingga bayi kecil itu hanya diasuh ibu dan neneknya.Saat usianya 5 tahun,melalui pemeriksaan dokter diketahui matanya tidak bisa dioperasi dan kebutaannya bersifat permanen.Sejak itu gadis kecil itu menjalani hidupnya dalam kegelapan.

Namun kekurangannya dalam penglihatan ternyata diimbangi dengan kepekaannya menulis puisi dan lirik lagu. Sepanjang hidupnya dia telah melahirkan hampir 8000 lagu dan 3 buku kumpulan puisi. Dia menulis lagu-lagu pop, lagu bertema patriotik dan lagu pujian (hymne). Gadis kecil itu bernama Fanny Crosby,lengkapnya Frances Jane Crosby.

Selama hidupnya, Fanny Crosby merupakan figure yang dikenal di seluruh Amerika. Dia dijuluki “Ratu Penulis Lagu Gospel”. Beberapa lagu pujian karyanya yang terkenal antara lain : Blessed Assurance (KJ No. 392 Kuberbahagia), Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior (KJ No. 26 :Mampirlah Dengar Doaku), All The Way My Savior Leads Me (KJ 408 Di Jalanku Ku Diiring), I Must Have The Savior With Me (KJ 402 Kuperlukan Juru’Slamat), Safe in The Arms of Jesus (KJ No. 388 S’lamat Di Tangan Yesus). Jesus, Keep Me Near The Cross (KJ 368 Pada Kaki Salimu),dll.Bahkan setelah Fanny meninggalpun, 3000 gereja di seluruh Amerika Serikat memperingati 105 tahun Fanny Crosby pada tahun 1925.

Awal Ketertarikan pada Musik

Saat usianya 8 tahun, Fanny dan ibunya pindah ke Connecticut. Mereka mengikuti kebaktian setiap hari minggu di Gereja Presbyterian.Ibu dan neneknya menanamkan ajaran Kristen Prostestan dengan membantunya menghapal ayat-ayat panjang Alkitab. Sejak usia 10 tahun, dia harus menghapal 5 bab Alkitab. Saat berusia 15 tahun dia telah hapal Kitab Amsal, Kidung Agung dan beberapa bab kitab Mazmur.Tahun 1832 seorang guru musik datang 2 kali seminggu ke desa mereka dan mengajar pelajaran menyanyi kepada Fanny dan teman-teman sebayanya. Saat itu, Fanny juga mengikuti ibadah di gereja Methodist dan sangat menyukai lagu-lagu pujian mereka.

Sebelum tepat menginjak usia 15 tahun, Fanny Crosby mendaftar di Institute untuk Orang Buta di New York (NYIB). Sekolah ini adalah sekolah yang dibiayai Negara. Dia tinggal di sana selama 8 tahun sebagai siswa dan 2 tahun sebagai alumni. Fanny belajar memainkan piano, organ, gitar dan harpa. Dia juga menjadi seorang penyanyi sopran yang bagus.

Puisi

Sejak masih kecil, Fanny sudah mampu menulis puisi yang indah. Saat dirinya masih berusia delapan tahun, ia berhasil menulis puisi berikut ini:

Oh, aku anak yang sangat berbahagia
Meskipun aku tidak bisa melihat
Aku memutuskan bahwa di dunia ini
Aku akan berpuas hati
Begitu banyak berkat kunikmati
yang tidak orang lain dapati!
Untuk menangis atau berduka karena aku buta
Aku tak akan melakukannya

Sebenarnya Fanny Crosby merasa enggan mempublikasikan puisi-puisinya karena menganggapnya sebagai “karya yang belum selesai”. Namun atas desakan NYIB, buku puisi pertamanya diterbitkan pada bulan April 1844 berjudul “A Blind Girl and Other Poems” (Seorang Gadis Buta dan Puisi-puisi Lainnya). Buku ini juga memuat hymne pertamanya berjudul “An Evening Hymne”, berdasarkan Mazmur 4: 8. Dia juga menerbitkan 2 buku puisi lain yang masing-masing berjudul “A Blind Orphan Girl” dan “ A Wreath Columbia’s Flower” , yang berisi 4 buah cerita pendek dan 30 puisi.

Inspirasi Lagu

Lirik lagu ciptaan Fanny terinspirasi dari berbagai hal yang terjadi dalam hidupnya. Lirik lagu Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour (“Mampirlah dengan Doaku”) dibuat setelah Fanny berbicara dalam pelayanan di sebuah penjara di Manhattan dan mendengar komentar para tahanan agar Tuhan tidak meninggalkan mereka. Namun di sumber lain disebutkan bahwa lirik lagu ini dibuat Fanny karena terinspirasi dari cerita Alkitab mengenai orang buta yang mendengar kedatangan Tuhan Yesus berteriak agar Yesus tidak melewatinya dan mau menghampirinya. Musiknya dibuat oleh Phoebe Knapp, seorang industrialis yang mempublikasikan banyak lagu-lagu Fanny Crosby. Lirik lagu aslinya antara lain seperti berikut:

Lagu “I am Thine O Lord” (KJ No. 362: Aku Milikmu, Yesus Tuhanku) ditulis bersama William H.Doane, menyuarakan panggilan Fanny untuk mensucikan kehidupan orang-orang Kristen.Fanny Crosby memiliki pemahaman iman Kristen yang berakar dari paham Puritan yang dikembangkan gereja Methodist dan Holiness Movement. Salah satu bait syairnya berbunyi:

1. I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice, And it told Thy love to me; But I long to rise in the arms of faith And be closer drawn to Thee.

Fanny Cross menikah tahun 1858 dengan Alexander van Alstynem seorang tuna netra dan juga pemusik. Tahun 1859, putrinya lahir namun meninggal dalam tidur setelah lahir. Kematian putrinya tersebut menginspirasi Fanny menulis syair lagu” Safe in the Arms of Jesus” (KJ No 388: S’lamat Di Tangan Yesus) dengan lagu dibuat oleh William H.Doane . Fanny mungkin ingin menggambarkan bahwa jiwa putrinya sudah selamat di tangan Yesus melalui liriknya:

Safe in the arms of Jesus, Safe on His gentle breast; There by His love o’ershaded, Sweetly my soul shall rest. Hark! ’tis the voice of angels Borne in a song to me, Over the fields of glory, Over the jasper sea.

Advokasi untuk Orang Buta

Selain aktif dalam menulis puisi dan lirik lagu, Fanny Crosby juga dikenal sebagai tokoh yang konsisten memperjuangkan pendidikan bagi orang buta dan missi penyelamatan (Rescue Mission). Setelah tamat dari NYIB, Fanny Crosby menjadi wanita pertama yang tampil di hadapan Kongress Amerika untuk membacakan puisi. Tanggal 24 Januari 1844, Fanny Crosby bersama siswa-siswi NYIB mengadakan konser di hadapan Kongres Amerika dan menyerukan pembentukan lembaga pendidikan untuk orang buta di seluruh negara bagian Amerika Serikat. Tahun 1846 mereka juga tampil di hadapan kongres Amerika bersama-sama dengan delegasi Institute Orang Buta Philadelhia dan Boston mengadvokasi dukungan pendidikan untuk orang buta di New York, Philadelhia dan Boston. Dia juga menyanyikan lagu yang dia gubah di Gedung Putihuntuk Presiden James K. Polk dan istrinya. Lirik lagunya berbunyi antara lain :

Tahun 1846 Fanny Crosby menjadi instruktur di NYIB mengajar Tata Bahasa, Retorika dan Sejarah. Saat mengajar di sana, dia berteman dengan Grover Cleveland yang di kemudian hari menjadi presiden Amerika Serikat. Cleveland yang saat itu berusia 17 tahun sering mentraskrip puisi-puisi Fanny yang didiktekan kepadanya. Presiden Cleveland memberi rekomendasi pada buku otobiografi Fanny Crosby yang diterbitkan tahun 1906.

Meskipun selama hidupnya ,Fanny Crosby telah menulis hanpir 9000 lirik lagu, namun penghasilannya dari lagu-lagu tersebut sanat sedikit. Hal ini disebabkan sifat royalty saat itu yang hanya diberikan kepada komposer lagu dan tidak kepada penulis lirik. Dia hanya dibayar putus 1 atau 2 dollar per lirik. Sepanjang hidupnya dia tidak pernah memiliki rumah sendiri dan hanya tinggal di rumah-rumah sewa. Namun demikian Fanny tidak pernah mempersoalkan hal tersebut dan mengganggap tujuannya menulis lirik adalah untuk memenangkan jiwa orang-orang bagi Kristus.

Fanny Crosby telah melakukan banyak karya besar dalam masa hidupnya yang panjang. Kegelapan tidak menghalanginya untuk menciptakan puisi dan lirik lagu yang indah serta berjuang untuk misi membantu pendidikan untuk orang buta sepertinya. Dia meninggal dalam usia 95 tahun pada tanggal 15 Februari 1915. Di batu nisannya tertulis:”Bibi Fanny: Dia telah Melakukan Apa yang Dia Mampu”.

Begitu banyak himne yang ditulis oleh Fanny Crosby. Bahkan, sekitar 3.000 himnenya masih dinyanyikan oleh gereja-gereja protestan sampai saat ini. Dia mendapat julukan sebagai "Ratu Penulis Lagu Gospel". Lagu-lagunya juga masuk dalam Kidung Jemaat (KJ). Lagu Fanny Crosby yang terkenal antara lain:

Masa Tua hingga Meninggal Dunia

Setelah meninggalkan kampus tempat ia mengajar pada sebuah fakultas di kota New York, Fanny dan suami mendedikasikan seluruh hidupnya untuk melayani orang-orang yang membutuhkan dan juga orang yang mengalami kemiskinan. Dengan mengandalkan penghasilan dari tulisan, puisi, dan syair lagu, Fanny Crosby menggunakan uang itu untuk menolong orang-orang yang berkekurangan. Ia melayani orang lain lebih dari dirinya sendiri. Akhirnya, pada tanggal 12 Februari 1915, saat ia berusia 94 tahun, ia meninggal dunia di Bridgeport, Connecticut. Kidung-kidung pujian yang indah lahir dari "kegelapan". Matanya yang buta menjadi sebuah keuntungan bagi Frances Jane Crosby untuk menulis dan menyanyikan kidung-kidung pujian untuk Juru Selamatnya. Burung penyanyi yang selama 94 tahun menyanyikan pujian dalam kegelapan, sekarang dapat menyanyikan pujian dalam terang yang indah. Kata-kata inilah yang terukir dalam batu nisannya: "Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine" (Ku Berbahagia, Yesus adalah Milikku).
